The Kyiv Metro remains one of the capital’s most reliable and accessible shelters during air raid alerts. At present 46 underground stations operate as shelters around the clock. To ensure that people’s time at stations is safe, comfortable and well-organised, the Underground has updated its rules and provided up-to-date guidance for residents.
What has changed: tents are now banned
The main change concerns the layout of the platforms. The administration notes, that It is now prohibited to pitch tents at stations, as they take up a lot of space and may hinder emergency evacuation or the passage of other people.
Instead of tents, residents of Kyiv are advised to bring sleeping mats (camping mats), inflatable mattresses or sleeping bags. They take up very little space when folded away, but allow you to wait out the danger in comfort.
Checklist: what to take with you to a shelter
The temperature at underground stations usually fluctuates between 17–18°C, and in the event of a prolonged stay or draughts, it may feel even colder. It is therefore important to pack an emergency kit carefully.
Essential shelter kit:
-
Warm clothes and blankets: Dress in layers, and bring a thermal mat, extra jumpers and warm socks.
-
Supplies of water and food: You should bring your own supply of drinking water and a nutritious snack (energy bars, nuts, dried fruit).
-
First-aid kit: Medicines you take regularly, as well as basic items (painkillers, sedatives, plasters).
-
Hygiene products: Wet wipes, antiseptics, dry tissues.
-
For pet owners: Pets are a common sight at the shelter. Be sure to bring them with you leashes, muzzles, pet carriers, as well as nappies and special bags for cleaning up after your pet.
A handy tip from the Underground
As experience shows, during widespread concerns Stations in the city’s residential areas are quickly becoming overcrowded. Passengers are reminded that Central underground stations are usually less busy. If you have the option of choosing where to wait out the alert, central platforms may offer more open space.
Important: During an air raid alert, entry to underground stations serving as shelters is free of charge. Please heed safety instructions and look after yourself and your loved ones!
