On the morning of 6 October, Russian troops struck one of the bridges across the Dnipro in Zaporizhzhia. A large crater was left in the carriageway, and a car caught fire following the attack. Due to the damage, traffic across the bridge was completely halted. The number of casualties has risen to five, including two Red Cross workers who were on their way to work when the strike occurred.
The strike hit the bridge directly
The acting head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration reported the attack Mikhail Semikin.
Footage published after the blast shows serious damage to the road surface: a crater has formed in the middle of the carriageway, with debris scattered all around. A fire also broke out on the bridge following the attack — a car caught fire. Due to the damage, the bridge has been closed to traffic. The authorities are asking drivers to take note of the restrictions and use alternative routes.
There has been no official statement as yet on the extent to which the impact affected the bridge’s load-bearing structures.
The number of casualties has risen to five
Initially, the authorities reported that two men, aged 43 and 54, had been injured. They were taken to hospital and their condition was described as minor. It later emerged that there were three further casualties — women aged 24 and 59 years old і A 36-year-old man. Everyone is provided with the necessary medical care.
The two men who were first reported turned out to be employees Ukrainian Red Cross Society. They were on their way to work when the Russian attack took place.
Zaporizhzhia was under attack throughout the night
The attack on the bridge was a continuation of a series of attacks in Zaporizhzhia. On the evening of 5 October, Russian troops struck a high-rise residential block. A fire broke out in the building, and emergency services evacuated people from the upper floors. Five people were also reported to have been injured as a result of the attack.
On the night of 5 October, Russia used attack drones and guided aerial bombs against Zaporizhzhia and the surrounding region. However, at the time of publication, the authorities had not officially specified the type of munition used to strike the bridge across the Dnipro.
The strike on the crossing has had a direct impact on the city’s transport links: traffic across the bridge remains suspended until the damage assessment and on-site work have been completed.
