«A »Geran-Siker’ struck a building in the centre of Dnipro

The strike took place this morning during yet another Russian attack on the city. The target was a facility «Ukrtelecom» in the centre of Dnipro. A fire broke out on the upper floors following the strike. The fire engulfed part of the façade and the interior, and a large plume of smoke rose above the building. Footage from the scene shows shattered windows, structural damage and intense flames.

Russia used the following in its attack the «Geran-Siker» missile» — one of the new types of attack drones that have recently been used with increasing frequency against Ukrainian cities.

Are there any problems with the internet?

The mere fact that a facility belonging to a major telecoms operator has been hit does not necessarily mean that communications in Dnipro have been completely cut off. Operators’ networks have backup data transmission routes, and if one node is damaged, part of the traffic can be rerouted via other infrastructure.

The nature of the damage to a specific Ukrtelecom facility is currently being assessed. At present, there is no confirmed information regarding widespread disruptions to home internet, telephone services or corporate networks in the city.

If active telecommunications equipment, the power supply or trunk lines have been damaged, the operator may need additional time to carry out repairs.

Telecommunications infrastructure has once again come under attack

Attacks on communications infrastructure pose far greater risks than a temporary loss of home internet access.

Telecommunications networks are used by businesses, government bodies, banks, healthcare organisations and other critical services. They carry large volumes of data and enable a range of digital services to operate.

That is precisely why, throughout the war, operators have been setting up backup channels, installing independent power supplies and duplicating key infrastructure. It will only be possible to fully assess the consequences of the strike on the Ukrtelecom facility once the damage has been assessed.
