The first reports of the attack emerged early in the morning. Residents of Saratov reported numerous explosions and flashes in the sky. The governor of the Saratov Region Roman Busargin confirmed the drone attack and damage to infrastructure in the city.
Busargin also spoke about the casualties. Due to the threat posed by UAVs, Gagarin Airport temporarily restricted the arrival and departure of aircraft.
The plant refines crude oil and produces fuel
Saratov Oil Refinery It has been in operation since 1934 and became part of Rosneft in March 2013. The company produces motor petrol, diesel and marine fuel, bitumen, industrial sulphur and other petroleum products.
In 2023, the refinery actually processed 4.8 million tonnes of crude oil. The nominal capacity of the facility, as stated by Rosneft, is approximately 7 million tonnes per year — this figure represents the potential processing capacity, not the annual production output.
According to Reuters, in 2024 the refinery processed 5.8 million tonnes of crude oil, or around 2.2% of the total Russian volume. On 2 August, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that this refinery and the «Engels».
Reports emerged from Engels of explosions, drones flying overhead and air defence operations
A series of powerful explosions rang out overnight in the neighbouring town of Engels. Local residents reported drones flying overhead, sirens and the Russian air defence system in full operation.
The «Engels-2» military airfield, one of the Russian Federation’s key strategic aviation bases, is situated near the town. The Russian authorities have not reported that the airfield was hit during this attack.
A fire broke out in the temporarily occupied city of Melitopol following the attack
Explosions were also heard that same night in the temporarily occupied city of Melitopol. Russian and local sources reported that a major fire broke out at one of the sites following a drone attack, and that further explosions were heard subsequently.
The exact location where the fire broke out has not been established. Melitopol lies on the route Rostov-on-Don – Mariupol – Berdiansk – Melitopol – Dzhankoy, which the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has described as a vital transport artery linking the Russian Federation with the temporarily occupied Crimea.
