Musk has warned that Starlink satellites are under threat due to the war

The founder of SpaceX has warned that using Starlink for offensive strikes could jeopardise the satellites and the safety of orbital operations.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has stated that the use of the Starlink satellite system for offensive military operations could provoke attacks on its satellites and a dangerous chain reaction of collisions in orbit. In his view, the massive accumulation of space debris could render certain areas of outer space unusable. The statement was made on 25 October against the backdrop of a dispute over restrictions on satellite communications for the Ukrainian military.

Briefly about the main points

  • Musk warned against using the civilian Starlink system for offensive strikes.
  • He suggested that the destruction of satellites could trigger a chain reaction of collisions.
  • SpaceX had previously restricted Starlink speeds in Ukraine due to alleged breaches of the terms of use.
  • On 24 October, Ukraine reported that Starlink and Starshield speeds had returned to normal.

Why did Musk start talking about the threat of satellites being destroyed?

25 October Elon Musk commented on social media X a report regarding the possibility of attacks on the Starlink satellite constellation. He explained that the threat of retaliatory strikes is one of the reasons why the commercial service must remain a civilian system.

According to the entrepreneur, Starlink It can provide communications for military infrastructure; however, its use in direct offensive operations poses additional risks.

Musk claims that such actions could make the satellites targets for retaliatory strikes. He also warned that their destruction could result in a huge amount of debris.

According to the founder of SpaceX, debris from a single destroyed spacecraft could damage other satellites, causing further collisions. The gradual increase in the amount of space debris could pose a serious threat to future space operations.

At the same time, Musk did not mention Russia directly in his post, instead using a general description of the adversary. His comments regarding the possible legitimacy of strikes against Starlink represent the entrepreneur’s personal view, rather than an established conclusion under international law.

What is known about the restrictions on Starlink in Ukraine

Musk’s statement came after more than a week of restrictions on satellite communications, which had affected the operation of Ukrainian military systems.

On 24 October, a businessman accused the Ukrainian military of breaching the terms of use of the civilian Starlink service by using it for offensive drone strikes. According to him, SpaceX has removed the technical capability for such use of the service.

At the same time, the President of Ukraine’s adviser on technology Sergey Beskrestnov, known as «Flash», refuted these claims. He emphasised that, due to existing technical limitations, the commercial Starlink system cannot be used for long-range or medium-range strikes.

Musk also drew a distinction between the civilian Starlink and the military system Starshield, noting that the decision on the use of the latter is taken by the US Government.

On 24 October, the Ukrainian side reported that the satellite communication link had returned to its previous speed performance. According to the Ministry of Defence, the connection remained stable even whilst the equipment was travelling at speeds in excess of 400 km/h.

Could the destruction of satellites really render space unusable?

The threat described by Musk is linked to a phenomenon known as the Kessler syndrome. This refers to a hypothetical scenario in which debris from destroyed space objects causes further collisions, which in turn create an ever-increasing number of dangerous fragments.

NASA and the European Space Agency regard the accumulation of space debris as a serious threat to space activities. Under unfavourable conditions, certain orbital zones may become dangerous or practically unsuitable for the operation of satellites.

However, the destruction of even a few spacecraft does not automatically lead to an uncontrolled chain reaction. The consequences depend on the altitude of the orbit, the amount of debris, its trajectories and the density of other space objects.

Russia has, in fact, already conducted destructive tests of anti-satellite weapons. In November 2021, a Russian missile destroyed the «Kosmos-1408» satellite, creating over 1,500 pieces of debris that could be tracked by ground-based surveillance systems.

At the time, NASA reported that the debris posed a threat to the International Space Station. Astronauts and cosmonauts had to take additional safety precautions.

Thus, the risk of large-scale orbital debris has been confirmed by scientific research and previous instances of satellite destruction. However, Musk’s assertion that space may become unusable remains a worst-case scenario assessment, rather than a proven consequence of potential attacks on Starlink.
