Russian citizens should refrain from travelling to Thailand due to the risk of being detained at the request of the United States. This was stated by a spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova.
According to her, the country – which is popular with Russian tourists – allegedly «remains one of the places where Washington has launched a veritable witch-hunt against Russians». The Russian diplomat claims that the US authorities are acting aggressively and «without regard for the Thai authorities».
The Russian Foreign Ministry claims that the US is carrying out «special operations» with the aim of detaining Russian citizens who «have come to their attention for one reason or another».
Bangkok’s reaction
Earlier, the Bangkok authorities issued a statement emphasising that Thailand remains a safe destination for tourists from all over the world. The kingdom’s authorities have emphasised that:
