Germany is launching an initiative to help Ukrainians return home
A special working group has been set up in Germany to coordinate the voluntary return of Ukrainian citizens to their homeland. This was announced by Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany Alexei Makeev. He emphasised that the new mechanism is designed to ensure effective cooperation between Ukrainian and German government bodies on matters relating to the return of Ukrainians once their stay abroad has come to an end.
The first Unity Hub in Berlin
One of the key elements of the initiative is the Unity Hub centres, where Ukrainians can access a wide range of government services, advice and information support. The first such centre has already opened in Berlin. It is expected to help citizens resolve administrative issues and obtain information regarding a possible return to Ukraine.
The situation regarding Ukrainians in Germany
According to the diplomat, there are currently around 1.3 million Ukrainians living in Germany who have fled the full-scale war. A significant proportion of them have already integrated into German society: many Ukrainians are officially employed and pay taxes and social security contributions. At the same time, Ukraine is interested in creating the conditions to facilitate the voluntary return of its citizens once the security situation has improved.
