A major fire has broken out in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, Russia, at the «Nizhnekamskneftekhim» petrochemical plant, which is part of the «Sibur» holding company. A powerful explosion was heard in the industrial area before the fire and thick smoke broke out.
Videos released by eyewitnesses and monitoring channels captured a bright flash followed by a fire. A large plume of smoke rose above the factory site and was visible from various parts of the city.
What is known about the fire at «Nizhnekamskneftekhim»
The company confirmed the fire and reported that the emergency services had been called out. Within about an hour, the fire had been contained, and the open flames were later completely extinguished.
According to preliminary information, the fire broke out on the polystyrene production line, which was operating at reduced capacity at the time due to external factors. The main production units were reportedly unaffected and continued to operate.
The company stated that there were no fatalities or injuries, and that the damage caused to the plant is considered to be minor. Laboratories have begun intensive monitoring of the air quality near the industrial site. The Russian side maintains that no danger to the residents of Nizhnekamsk has been recorded. The company and local media have reported that the fire has been brought under control.
The cause of the massive explosion remains unknown
The company has not disclosed the official cause of the explosion and fire. Local chat groups reported that a polystyrene production workshop was on fire.
Monitoring channel Exilenova+ suggested that the accident may have been caused by the plant’s systems being overloaded following previous drone attacks on the industrial zone. There is currently no evidence to support this theory.
The published footage shows the moment of a powerful explosion, followed by a major fire. However, the lack of official information means it is not possible to say whether the incident was caused by an external impact, a technical fault or a breach of safety procedures.
One of Russia’s largest petrochemical plants
«Nizhnekamskneftekhim» is one of the largest production sites of the Russian holding company «Sibur». The plant produces synthetic rubbers, polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene and other types of plastic.
According to the company itself, it produces over 700,000 tonnes of rubber and roughly the same amount of plastic every year. Its products are used in the tyre industry, the automotive sector, the construction industry and other sectors of the Russian economy.
Throughout 2026, the Nizhnekamsk industrial zone has been targeted by drone attacks on several occasions. In particular, on 8 July, following a series of explosions, fires were reported near «Nizhnekamskneftekhim» and the oil refinery TANECO. However, no official link has been established between the current accident and the previous impacts.
