Night-time attack on Nizhnekamsk

On the night of 8 July, drones attacked the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk in the Republic of Tatarstan. Following explosions in the industrial zone, eyewitnesses reported thick smoke and a fire. It is believed that facilities at the petrochemical complex – which is of strategic importance to the Russian economy and the military-industrial sector – may have been targeted.

Key industrial centre under attack

Nizhnekamsk is one of the key centres of the Russian Federation’s petrochemical industry. It is home to the «Nizhnekamskneftekhim» enterprises and an oil refinery complex TANECO, which produce fuel, synthetic rubber, plastics and other products for the civil and defence industries. Following the drone attack, explosions were heard in the vicinity of the plants, and thick smoke rose above the industrial site. The Russian authorities, as is customary, have not disclosed any information regarding possible damage to strategic facilities.

Oil refining infrastructure under threat

Over the past few months, Ukrainian long-range drones have been regularly attacking Russian oil refineries, oil depots and petrochemical plants. The aim of these strikes is to reduce Russia’s ability to finance the war and supply military equipment with fuel. Facilities in Tatarstan have already been targeted on numerous occasions. In particular, there have been previous reports of strikes on TANECO and other major production sites in the region, which were followed by fires at the facilities.

Lack of official information

At the time of publication, the Russian authorities had not confirmed the nature of the damage nor reported any possible casualties. There is currently no independent confirmation as to which specific target was hit during the latest attack. Further details are being ascertained.
