Russia has halted production of the «Geran-3» jet-powered drones, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, the drone was capable of reaching speeds of up to 370 km/h and had a range of up to 1,000 km. The intelligence service considers it a transitional model leading to the «Geran-4», which was being developed to be powered by a jet engine.

Briefly about the main points

  • The Main Intelligence Directorate announced that production of the «Geranium-3» missiles had been halted.
  • The model has been described as a stepping stone towards the launch of the «Gerani-4».
  • Forty-five components of foreign origin were identified in the drone.
  • The countries mentioned include the US, China, Switzerland, Germany and the UK.
  • Ukraine is countering high-speed targets using its air force, air defence systems, electronic warfare capabilities and interceptors.

«Geran-3» has become an interim platform for the new model

According to a technical explanation previously published by the Main Intelligence Directorate, the «Geran-3» utilised the airframe of the petrol-powered «Geran-2». Its structural strength was insufficient for high-speed flight and manoeuvres involving high g-forces.

For «Gerani-4»It is claimed to feature a reinforced structure and different aerodynamics. Intelligence sources link this newer model to a transition to a platform that was designed from the outset to accommodate a jet engine.".

Foreign components and countermeasures against high-speed UAVs

In the design of the «Gerani-3», GUR specialists identified 45 components manufactured abroad. The countries of origin of the parts include the USA, China, Switzerland, Germany and the UK.

To counter high-speed aerial targets, Ukraine employs a multi-layered defence system comprising aircraft, anti-aircraft systems, electronic warfare, mobile fire groups and interceptor drones. The Ministry of Defence has also cited the AIM family of missiles on F-16s and NASAMS ground-based systems as means of countering jet-powered UAVs and cruise missiles.
