The US is stepping up its support for Ukraine to strike at Russia
The US is discussing ways to enhance Ukraine’s capabilities in terms of striking long-range strikes across the territory of the Russian Federation. The aim of this strategy is to demonstrate to the Kremlin the vulnerability of its rear infrastructure and to force it to cease its aggression. This was stated by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the meeting between the presidents Vladimir Zelensky and Donald Trump at the NATO summit in Ankara.
«Russia needs to see how difficult it is to defend its own territory,» Rubio said. According to him, the Ukrainian Defence Forces’ ability to penetrate deep into Russian territory has significantly altered the dynamics of the fighting in recent months. In particular, this refers to successful attacks on military logistics and oil refineries of the enemy.
«We will help Ukraine strike deep into Russia so that it ends the war. We are discussing Ukraine’s ability to reach deep into Russia so that Russia can see how difficult it is to defend its airspace,» emphasised Marco Rubio.
According to the State Secretary, taking the war onto the aggressor’s territory creates the necessary conditions for the start of genuine and substantive negotiations on the cessation of hostilities on terms that are fair to Ukraine.
Trump’s response: an escalation that brings the end of the war closer
US President Donald Trump directly backed his subordinate’s position. He acknowledged that deep strikes against Russian military and energy facilities constitute a step towards escalation, but described this approach as the only viable means of exerting pressure on Moscow. «This is an escalation, but it is also an escalation that could help bring the war to an end. We are putting strong pressure on Russian President Putin. I don’t think he likes it,» Trump said.
Thus, Washington has confirmed at the highest level its intention not only to continue supporting Kyiv, but also to build up Ukraine’s long-range capabilities in order to compel the Kremlin to end the war.
