Ukrainian military strike at a tanker «MARQUISE», which was subject to sanctions. The Cameroon-flagged vessel was drifting approximately 210 kilometres southeast of Tuapse. According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, at the time of the attack, the tanker was probably waiting to reload fuel from another vessel at sea.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine clarifies that the strike was on the stern of the MARQUISE, in the area of the propeller group and engine room. This is one of the most vulnerable areas of the vessel, and damage to it could significantly hamper its further movement and controllability.
Circumstances of the attack and preliminary consequences
The MARQUISE tanker was adrift, indicating that it was awaiting a fuel transshipment operation. The choice of this particular vessel for the attack is likely to be related to its involvement in sanctions circumvention schemes that allow the transport of oil products to bypass international restrictions.
