Trump announced the suspension of funding for Israel

During an interview on the programme *Fox & Friends* the American President stated that the US no longer needs to allocate billions of dollars to Israel every year.

According to Trump, he has already reached an agreement with Benjamin Netanyahu on the cessation of regular payments after 2026.

The US President explained his position by saying that Israel has sufficient resources to fund its defence needs independently.

At the same time, Trump emphasised that the suspension of regular aid would not mean that Washington was completely withdrawing its support for its ally.

The US leader also stated that Israel would be able to continue purchasing US weapons, but at its own expense.

Trump also criticised his political opponents for using US aid to Israel as an argument against the Republicans.

According to Reuters, the Israeli Prime Minister’s office did not immediately comment on the US President’s statement.

How much money does the US provide to Israel each year?

The United States remains one of Israel’s key military partners.

In 2016, Washington and Jerusalem signed a ten-year memorandum on military aid, which provides for funding totalling $38 billion over the financial years 2019–2028.

Under the agreement, Israel receives the following each year:

  • $3.3 billion — for military funding, including the procurement of weapons.
  • $500 million — for joint missile defence programmes.

The total amount is $3.8 billion per year.

That is precisely why Trump’s announcement that payments would cease after 2026 attracted particular attention: the current memorandum runs until 2028.

Reuters notes that it is currently unclear exactly which funding programmes the US President was referring to.

Furthermore, decisions on the allocation of federal funds fall within the remit of the US Congress. Therefore, the President’s statement alone does not automatically mean that all payments will cease.

Netanyahu had previously suggested turning down US aid

Back in early 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his intention to gradually reduce the country’s dependence on US military aid.

In an interview with CBS in May, he confirmed that he had discussed the matter directly with Donald Trump.

Netanyahu proposed gradually reducing US funding to zero over the next ten years.

His concept envisaged a shift from a model of free military aid to a broader defence and technological partnership.

In particular, the discussions centred on the development of joint military projects, the defence industry and cutting-edge technologies.

However, the timeframe mentioned by Trump — the end of 2026 — is considerably shorter than the Israeli Prime Minister’s previous ten-year plan.

What will happen to US aid to Israel?

As of 3 November 2026, Trump had publicly announced his intention to cease regular funding for Israel at the end of the current year.

At the same time, the White House has not yet released any details regarding the implementation of this decision, and the Israeli side has not confirmed the reported agreement.

The current memorandum provides for military assistance until 2028, and any subsequent changes will depend, in particular, on decisions taken by the US Congress.

So, at present, this is a political statement by the US President, rather than funding that has already been cut off. Further decisions from Washington and Israel’s official position are still awaited.
