Why have emergency power cuts been introduced in Kyiv?

Mayor of the city Vitali Klitschko He stated that the emergency restrictions were caused by damage to facilities at the Kyiv regional power hub as a result of Russian strikes.

According to the information DTEK, emergency power cuts were implemented on the orders of NEC «Ukrenergo». During such restrictions, the usual hourly schedules do not apply, so power cuts may occur without warning.

The situation was exacerbated by previous damage to power infrastructure. DTEK explained that new strikes on power facilities, in particular those in the capital, CHP, have worsened the condition of the power system.

There have been disruptions to the water supply in the capital

Due to a power cut, the main facilities of «Kyivvodokanal» have lost power. As a result, some buildings in Kyiv have lost their water supply or experienced a drop in water pressure in the mains supply.

The Kyiv City State Administration has warned that even after the power supply is restored, it will take time for the water mains to fill up again and for the pressure to stabilise.

Staff from «Kyivvodokanal», together with power company workers, are carrying out repair work. Whilst the water supply remains unreliable, residents can collect drinking water from the city’s drinking fountains.

Public transport was brought to a standstill due to a power cut

Problems with the electricity supply have also affected the operation of the capital’s public transport services.

«Kyivpastrans»… reported the temporary suspension of services on trolleybus routes 4, 5, 7, 11, 16, 23, 26, 35, 39 and 41, as well as tram routes 14 and 15. Due to a power cut, the Kyiv funicular also suspended operations.

In addition, tram services on routes 1, 2 and 3 were delayed due to a power cut affecting the overhead line. Bus route 3T was organised to transport passengers. Subsequently, some services were resumed, although services were running with deviations from the timetable.

When will electricity and water supplies be restored in Kyiv?

In their verified reports, the municipal services did not specify exact dates for the full restoration of electricity and water supplies.

Power company staff are continuing to repair the damaged equipment, whilst utility workers are working to restore normal operations at the pumping stations. The situation depends on the condition of the power grid and whether it is safe to carry out the repair work.

As of 3 November, emergency power cuts, water supply disruptions and temporary suspensions of electric transport services have been confirmed in the capital. You can check the current status of the electricity supply at a specific address via DTEK, and any changes to transport services on the official «Kyivpastrans» websites.
