NATO is adapting to new challenges

Turkish Minister of Defence Yashar Güler stated that the United States has no plans to withdraw from NATO, despite the US President’s statements Donald Trump regarding a possible review of Washington’s role within the Alliance. According to Güler, NATO does not is going through a crisis, but is going through a period of adjustment to the new security reality, particularly as a result of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.

«NATO is strengthening unity; the development of the defence industry and support for Ukraine remain the main priorities,» emphasised Güler.

Support for Ukraine at the summit

One of the central themes NATO leaders’ meeting, which will take place on 7–8 July in Ankara, will provide further support for Ukraine. Summit participants plan to reaffirm the Alliance’s unity by demonstrating increases in defence budgets and discussing ways to strengthen the transatlantic defence industry. Ankara emphasises that support for Ukraine remains a vital component of European security.

Turkey is seeking a greater role

Turkey, which has the second-largest army among NATO countries, has significantly expanded its defence production. However, Ankara has repeatedly stated that it is not sufficiently involved in European defence programmes due to political disagreements.

«Without Turkey’s military capabilities, the European security system will not be able to function as effectively as possible,» said Güler.

New investment in defence

Turkey has confirmed its readiness to fulfil its commitment to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. The country plans to achieve all its defined defence objectives by 2029, including the development of unmanned aerial vehicles, anti-drone systems and modern air defence systems. Ankara is also considering the possibility of purchasing American Patriot systems.

Why it matters

Turkey’s statement reflects its desire to reassure its allies against the backdrop of discussions regarding the future role of the US in NATO. Ankara is convinced that the Alliance remains united and continues to adapt to new threats, whilst seeking to strengthen its own influence within the European security system.
