The former head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, was taken into custody by the HACC. Bail in the amount of UAH 140 million was set as an alternative to arrest. The case is being considered within the framework of anti-corruption proceedings on alleged abuse of power in public office.

Court decision in relation to Andriy Yermak

On 14 May, the High Anti-Corruption Court held a hearing on the choice of a preventive measure for the former head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak. The hearing began at 09:00 with a minute of silence in honour of those killed in the war waged by Russia against Ukraine. Yermak appeared in court in person to participate in the trial.

After reviewing the parties' submissions, the court issued a decision: to take Yermak into custody with the alternative of bail in the amount of UAH 140 million. The defence was granted the right to appeal this decision.

The essence of an anti-corruption case

The proceedings concern alleged abuse of office and financial irregularities, which, according to the investigation, could have caused significant damage to the state. The details of the suspicion remain partially closed to the public, but the political status of the defendant and the scale of the case have caused a wide public outcry.

The case against Yermak is being pursued by the HACC as part of its anti-corruption activities aimed at investigating the actions of top officials. It is known that the suspicion relates to the period when Yermak was head of the Presidential Office.

HACC and public outcry

In recent years, the High Anti-Corruption Court has become a key venue for high-level corruption cases. It is this court that considers the most high-profile cases NABU and the SAPO, which concern government officials, former and current.

Cases involving ex-officials traditionally attract public attention and provoke active discussion in the political environment. Therefore, the decision regarding Andriy Yermak may have significant consequences for the further development of anti-corruption policy in Ukraine.

Why it matters

The choice of a preventive measure for the former head of the Presidential Office in the case of alleged corruption offences is indicative of the Ukrainian justice system. The HACC continues to demonstrate independence in cases involving top officials, and public scrutiny of such processes remains high. The court's decision determines not only the fate of a particular case, but also the level of trust in anti-corruption institutions in general.
