Talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland are taking place against a backdrop of growing tensions in the Persian Gulf. Upon his arrival in Switzerland, US Vice-President J.D. Vance expressed his hope that the ceasefire between the parties could be maintained.
“I am confident that the ceasefire will hold,” he said in a comment before his departure.
However, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and in Lebanon remains difficult. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards have announced that obstruction of the duct, which is a key route for global oil and gas supplies. However, according to the US Central Command, 55 merchant vessels continued to pass through the strait, indicating that commercial traffic remains stable.
Tensions in Lebanon
The situation in Lebanon is also escalating. As a result of Israeli air strikes Twenty people were killed, despite the declared ceasefire.
“We will not allow Israel to have free rein in Lebanon,” said a Hezbollah spokesperson.
Israel, for its part, has reaffirmed its readiness to take action against any threat to its troops.

In Switzerland, an Iranian delegation led by the chief negotiator Mohammad Bakir Kalibaf, is seeking to ensure that the US fulfils its obligations.
“We will insist on the fulfilment of these commitments, as previous agreements have not been implemented,” said a spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The talks could be an important step towards stabilising the situation in the region, but tensions in Lebanon and around the Strait of Hormuz are jeopardising their success. It is important that all parties honour their commitments; otherwise, the region’s energy security will remain at risk.
