International support for Ukrainian shipping
International partners are actively supporting Ukrainian shipping, having confirmed contributions totalling 550,000 US dollars. These include US$140,000 from the European Commission for the «IMO for Ukraine» project, which is being implemented with the support of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). France and the United Kingdom had previously joined the project, and Canada has also announced its support.
Despite constant Russian attacks, the Ukrainian maritime corridor continues to operate. Since September 2023, 206 million tonnes of cargo have been transported through the ports of Greater Odesa, of which 122 million tonnes were grain. Almost 8,100 vessels have passed through the corridor. These figures demonstrate the importance of maritime routes to Ukraine’s economy.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian coordinated attacks have caused harm to 264 people, and 967 have been damaged or partially destroyed port infrastructure facilities, as well as 207 civilian vessels. These attacks are a blow to global food security, international trade and civilian shipping.
At the same time, Ukraine has achieved an important result at the IMO – a Ukrainian circular note condemning Russian attacks on civilian shipping has been officially circulated amongst the Organisation’s member states. This reinforces the international record of Russia’s violations of the rules of the law of the sea and sends a clear signal of international support for Ukraine and the safety of shipping in the Black Sea.
