A massive attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region: what is known this morning

The capital was attacked by ballistic missiles in several waves, whilst the Kyiv region faced a threat from missiles and drones throughout the night.

On the night of 7 October, Russia carried out a combined air strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The capital was struck by ballistic missiles at least twice, whilst during a wider attack across Ukraine, the enemy also deployed Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers, cruise missiles and jet-powered drones. Two people were killed in Kyiv, and a warehouse and a garage co-operative were damaged. The Kyiv region was under threat from missiles and drones throughout the night, and air defence systems were in operation.

Kyiv was attacked with ballistic missiles in several waves

The Air Force began issuing the first warnings of ballistic missiles heading towards the capital shortly after 03:00. A series of explosions then rang out in Kyiv. In the early hours of the morning, the threat recurred — the military again reported several high-speed targets heading towards the capital simultaneously.

In its final update as of this morning, the Kyiv City Military Administration noted that Kyiv was attacked by ballistic missiles during the night. At the time of writing, no official details had been provided regarding the types of missiles that struck the capital directly.

Reports of the possible use of «Zircons» also appeared in the media and on monitoring channels.

Two people have died in the Darnytskyi district

The most severe confirmed damage was recorded in the Darnytskyi district. A rocket struck the grounds of a garage co-operative, where a fire broke out and structures were destroyed. Whilst clearing up the damage, it emerged that two men who had died. The fire was eventually brought under control.

At another location in the Darnytskyi district, debris fell onto an open area.

Warehouses were on fire in Podil

In the Podilskyi district, a rocket struck an area of non-residential buildings. The strike damaged a warehouse and caused a fire.

Monitoring channel eRadar reported that a warehouse belonging to a chain of construction tool shops may have been hit Dnipro-M. However, as of this morning, neither the company nor the city authorities have publicly confirmed that the destroyed facility belonged to this particular chain, so this detail remains unconfirmed for the time being.

At the start of the attack, the mayor Vitali Klitschko It also reported on the impact in the Obolon and Shevchenkivskyi districts. However, in a later summary from the Kyiv City Military Administration, as at 08:00, the confirmed impact was already stated as in two districts — Podil and Darnytsia.

The Kyiv region was under threat all night

The missile threat has spread to virtually the entire Kyiv region.

After midnight, a red alert for a missile threat was successively declared in the Boryspil, Obukhiv, Fastiv, Bila Tserkva, Vyshhorod, Bucha and Brovary districts. In some areas, the state of alert lasted until morning.

Later, the Air Force also recorded jet-powered UAV, which was travelling from the west of the Chernihiv region towards the Kyiv region.

The Kyiv Regional State Administration reported on the operation of the air defence system. A detailed report on the damage and possible casualties in the region was still being finalised at the time of writing.

Russia has deployed Tu-95MS and Tu-160 aircraft

The attack on the capital region took place against the backdrop of a much broader combined attack across Ukraine.

The use of strategic bombers has been confirmed Tu-95MS and Tu-160, which are equipped with Kh-101 cruise missiles. In addition, the enemy deployed ballistic and jet-powered attack drones. The main targets of the night-time strikes were Kyiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and the Poltava region.

At around 03:00, the Air Force also reported that six had taken off Tu-95, and as morning approached, cruise missiles began to enter Ukrainian airspace.

Zelenskyy had warned the day before that an attack was being prepared

On the evening of 6 October Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian intelligence had received new information regarding Russia’s preparations for a massive strike. The President called on Ukrainians to respond to missile alerts and stated that the Air Force and other services were preparing to repel an attack.

Overnight, the warning materialised in several waves of strikes, with the same ballistic missiles being used repeatedly against Kyiv.

Information regarding the impact in the capital and the region is still being clarified.
