Bullying in a shopping mall uncovered in Prykarpattia region

According to the State Bureau of Investigation, the head of a district recruitment centre and three servicemen who beat and humiliated mobilised people were exposed in Prykarpattia region. The details are published in the SBI's report. The investigation established several episodes of ill-treatment accompanied by physical violence and humiliation.

One of the incidents occurred in a hospital, where a mobilised man refused to undergo a fluoroscopy. He was beaten for this action: he was hit on the head and liver, and later the beating continued in the TCC. Doctors diagnosed the victim with a broken rib.

Investigative actions and consequences for victims

In another episode, according to the investigation, a mobilised man was held by force, beaten with hands and feet, pepper sprayed and left lying on a concrete floor. As a result of his injuries, the man underwent a complex operation. Both cases were the subject of separate criminal proceedings.

All four suspects were taken into custody without the right to be released on bail. The SBI informs that they face up to 12 years in prison under the articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Reaction of the authorities and human rights activists

Law enforcement officials emphasise the inadmissibility of violence by military personnel against mobilised people. Authorities in the Carpathian region have called for maximum control over the observance of the law in TCC and transparency of mobilisation procedures. Members of the public are demanding greater control over the actions of military officials.

Human rights organisations emphasise the need to respond promptly to such incidents and to ensure proper protection of the rights of mobilised citizens in the military.

Why it matters

The revelation of abuse in the TCC in Prykarpattia raises the question of the safety and dignity of those mobilised while performing their duty to the state. Such cases call into question the credibility of military structures and may affect public attitudes towards the mobilisation process.

A timely response by law enforcement agencies and bringing the perpetrators to justice are key to preventing similar crimes in the future. Restoring justice and ensuring the rule of law in military units should be a priority for the state.
