Temperatures of up to +28° and localised thunderstorms are forecast for Ukraine on 15 July

On Wednesday, 15 July, variable cloud cover is expected across Ukraine, with short showers and thunderstorms in places, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre. Daytime temperatures will range from 23–28°. No rainfall is forecast for Kyiv and the surrounding region. In the Carpathian region, Transcarpathia and the south-east, thunderstorms may disrupt the operations of energy companies.

Where are showers and fog forecast?

According to the forecast by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, atmospheric pressure will rise slightly on 15 July, and the weather will gradually stabilise. Despite this, short-lived rain and thunderstorms.

Fog is expected in places this morning in the Carpathian region and in the east of the country. The wind will be north-westerly, at 5–10 metres per second. According to weather forecasters, the current cool spell will give way to pleasant summer warmth.

Thunderstorms and warnings for specific regions

The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre has issued a warning of thunderstorms during the day in the Carpathian region, Transcarpathia and the south-eastern regions. For these areas, forecasters have issued a Level I hazard warning (yellow).

Weather conditions may make it more difficult for energy companies to operate. However, as of the time of publication of this forecast, there are no reports of accidents, power cuts or damage.

Water levels are expected to rise in the west

Due to heavy rainfall on the evening of 14 July and throughout 15 July, the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre also issued a hydrological warning. In the Prut and Siret sub-basins, water levels may rise by 0.3–1 metre, and on some rivers in the Syan and Dniester basins in the Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, by 0.2–0.8 metres.

Water levels on the left-bank tributaries of the Dniester in the Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi and Vinnytsia regions are forecast to rise by 0.1–0.5 metres. On the section of the Prut River between Chernivtsi and the state border, a flood wave with a rise of 0.3–0.8 metres was expected to pass through.

According to the baseline forecast, these changes are not expected to have any adverse effects. However, during heavy downpours, significant local and slope runoff is possible, as well as a rapid rise in water levels in small watercourses.

What will the weather be like in Kyiv?

Variable cloud cover with no rain is forecast for the capital and the Kyiv region. A north-westerly wind will continue at speeds of 5–10 metres per second.

Temperatures in Kyiv are expected to reach 26–28° during the day, and 23–28° across the region. Consequently, the main weather risk of the day in certain regions will not be high temperatures, but localised thunderstorms and downpours.
