Two electricity substations were attacked in Crimea

On the night of 5 July, two key electricity substations were hit in the temporarily occupied Crimea. According to reports from monitoring organisations, large-scale fires broke out at the sites. One of the sites hit was the 220 kV «Bakhchisaray» substation, which is one of the main power hubs supplying electricity to the Bakhchisaray district.

The «Zymine» substation, with a voltage class of 110/35/10 kV, was also affected. It receives high-voltage electricity from the main power lines and distributes it to consumers after stepping down the voltage.

Possible consequences for Crimea

The «Zymine» substation is equipped with two power transformers with a combined capacity of 50 MVA, making it a vital part of the peninsula’s energy infrastructure. Should significant damage be confirmed, the attack could lead to power cuts in a number of settlements, hampering the functioning of military and civilian infrastructure in occupied Crimea.

At present, the Russian authorities have not officially commented on the extent of the damage or the possible consequences of the strikes. Details of the attack are still being clarified.
