On the morning of 23 September, Russia continued its massive drone attack on Kyiv. A huge column of black smoke rose in the area around the Central Railway Station. Telegram channels in the capital are reporting a fire on the site of the former Railway Market, known to Kyiv residents as «Shaiba».

• Local public groups are reporting on the «Shayba» market near the South Station.
• The Kyiv City Military Administration has not yet officially confirmed the name of this facility.
• The Russian Federation has also attacked railway infrastructure in Kyiv — a railway worker has been wounded.
• As of 10.28, eight people were reported to have been injured in the capital; one man died in hospital.
A major fire broke out near the station
Footage from the area around the capital’s railway station began to circulate on local Telegram channels on the morning of 23 September. It shows intense flames and thick black smoke rising above buildings near the railway infrastructure.
In local reports, the facility is referred to as the «Shayba» market» — the former Railway Market, situated not far from the South Railway Station.
At the same time, Kyiv’s initial official report merely stated that o At 6.47 am, a fire broke out on the premises of a transport company in the Solomyanskiy district following the Russian attack. The authorities did not disclose the name of the business or market at the time.
It is therefore correct at this stage to refer to reports by local media outlets regarding «Shayba», rather than to an officially confirmed direct hit on the market itself.
What is known about the «Shayba» market?»
The so-called «Shayba» market is situated on 1 Mokriy Street in the Solomyanskyi district of Kyiv, not far from Pivdennyi Station.
The Railway Market building was constructed in In 1973, designed by the architect Alla Anishchenko. It got its unofficial name, «Shayba», because of its distinctive round shape.
Over the years, the site has been home to a food market, the «Okean» shop, the Kyiv Universal Exchange and the «Velyka Kyshenya» supermarket. After it closed, the building stood virtually unused for a long time.
The building is also well known to supporters of Ukrainian modernism: activists have repeatedly spoken out against its possible demolition.
Russia has attacked Kyiv’s railway infrastructure
Separately, Ukrzaliznytsia confirmed that Russian drones had attacked that morning the capital’s railway infrastructure.
The company’s chairman, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, reported that one of the railway workers sustained shrapnel wounds whilst returning home after his shift. He was taken to hospital.
At the same time, he himself The Central Railway Station was not damaged, Ukrzaliznytsia reported after reports emerged of explosions near it.
Due to an aerial threat, Kyiv City Express services were also temporarily suspended in both directions this morning.
The attack on Kyiv lasted several hours
Russian drones flew over the capital on several occasions throughout the morning.
In addition to the Solomyanskyi district, storage facilities and a petrol station were attacked in the Holosiivskyi district. In the Darnytskyi district, a transport infrastructure facility was hit and a fire broke out at a petrol station.
After 9.00 am, reports of further strikes continued to come in. In the Holosiivskyi district, a UAV struck a four-storey business centre and, later, a transport infrastructure site.
In the Solomyanskiy district, at 11.15, the authorities reported that a UAV had crashed into a shop building, and at 11.30, that it had struck a nine-storey non-residential building at the level of the fourth floor.
One person has died and eight have been injured
As of 10:28, 23 September Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that eight people injured as a result of the morning attack.
One of the men, who had been taken to hospital in a serious condition, has died. Four of the injured remained in the wards of the city’s hospitals.
According to the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office, the victim was 42 years old. He sustained fatal injuries during a Russian attack on a petrol station in the Darnytskyi district.
The full extent of the attack and the scale of the damage to all facilities are still being assessed.
