Illegal fuel exports: Kazakhstan tightens controls

The Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs is stepping up controls on the illegal export of fuel. 255 cases of illegal fuel shipments have been detected since the start of the year.

Border controls: what was found in Kazakhstan

The illegal export of fuel has become a major challenge for Kazakhstan. Since the start of the year, strict controls have uncovered 255 cases of fuel being transported using additional fuel tanks. These tanks were illegally fitted to vehicles to increase the volume of fuel being transported.

The Ministry of the Interior has announced tighter border controls. There are 59 special police checkpoints operating at border crossings, where officers are inspecting vehicles in conjunction with other state agencies.

“We will immediately detect and put a stop to any attempts to smuggle fuel,” the Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

Legislative measures and liability

All offenders who used unauthorised fuel tanks have been held administratively liable. Under Part 7 of Article 590 of the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Administrative Offences, they face fines and other penalties. It is worth noting that the offenders included both local residents and 195 foreign nationals.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, the authorities have announced strict control measures. Once illegal tanks have been identified and removed, the vehicles are returned to their owners. This demonstrates the authorities’ desire to strike a balance between control and citizens’ rights.

The geopolitical and economic context

Illegal fuel exports poses serious risks. Not only does it harm Kazakhstan’s economy, but it also affects the region’s energy security. The situation involving the active movement of fuel could destabilise the energy market, creating problems for neighbouring countries.

Amid global tensions and the search for new energy resources, every drop of fuel counts. As a major supplier of energy resources, Kazakhstan is demonstrating its determination to ensure stability and the rule of law within its territory.
