Ukrainians abroad: a pattern of arson attacks

Law enforcement officers have established that the arson attacks were organised by two residents of the Zaporizhzhia region and a resident of Bukovina. They recruited perpetrators remotely from among their Ukrainian acquaintances living in Europe and North America. The preparations for the arson attacks were coordinated from Chernivtsi.

In July–September 2025, the contractors in Berlin They carried out a series of arson attacks on shops belonging to a single retail chain. They received a cash reward for carrying out these «assignments». This points to a well-organised network operating at an international level.

New charges have already been brought against the three suspects. They are being held at the Chernivtsi Remand Centre and are already on trial in another case concerning the operation of a fraudulent call centre.

“We are continuing our investigation and looking into their possible involvement in arson attacks carried out on commission in Canada and the US, particularly in Chicago and Miami,” said a spokesperson for the National Police.

The penalty under this section provides for up to 10 years’ imprisonment, which underlines the seriousness of the offences committed by those involved. Law enforcement agencies hope to bring the investigation to a swift conclusion and hold those responsible to account.
