Parliament adopts new law

On 24 April, the Turkish parliament voted in favour of a law restricting access to social media for children under 15. The law provides for mandatory age verification of users on online platforms.

The document also requires social networks to introduce parental controls and respond quickly to harmful content aimed at children.

Requirements for social platforms

According to the new law, all major social networks must create mechanisms to verify the age of users. In addition, they must provide parental controls for children's accounts.

Platforms are obliged to respond promptly to reports of harmful or dangerous content that may affect minors.

Next steps: President's signature

The law will enter into force after the signature of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The decision is expected to be made in the near future.

After signing the document, social networks will have to adapt their systems to the new requirements of Turkish law.
