Russia once again violated the partial ceasefire by launching a large-scale attack on Ukraine on the night of 12 May. Over 200 attack drones and more than 30 air strikes were used, damaging energy infrastructure, residential buildings and railways.
Massive shelling of Ukrainian cities
Overnight, Russia launched more than 200 attack drones into Ukraine and carried out more than 30 air strikes. As reported by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, This ended several days of relative silence at the frontline. The attacks resulted in damage to energy facilities, apartment buildings, a kindergarten, and a strike on a civilian railway locomotive.
According to the information, the attack drones were shot down in different regions: Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, as well as in Kyiv and Kyiv region.
Casualties and destruction
As a result of the night attacks, there are wounded and, unfortunately, dead among the civilian population. The President expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Significant damage was caused not only to the residential sector, but also to critical infrastructure, which affects the supply of electricity and transport links.
The strike on the kindergarten and the locomotive on the railway is particularly noteworthy, indicating a targeted attack on civilian objects. The authorities are urging citizens to be careful and follow safety rules during air raids.
Reaction of the Ukrainian authorities
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasised that Ukraine will act in a mirror image in response to all Russian steps. He stressed that it is Russia that must take the first step towards a real and lasting ceasefire. Until then, international sanctions against Moscow should not only be maintained, but also strengthened.
The President called on Ukraine's partners not to stand aside but to continue working together for the sake of security, justice and lasting peace. Easing sanctions or reducing attention to the situation in Ukraine could have negative consequences for the security of the entire region.
Why it matters
Massive nighttime attacks once again confirm that the threat to Ukraine's civilian population and infrastructure remains extremely high. Russia's violation of the partial ceasefire demonstrates its lack of intentions to de-escalate and reinforces the need for international pressure.
Maintaining and strengthening sanctions, as well as support from partners, are key to deterring aggression and protecting Ukrainian citizens. Last night's events are yet another reminder of the price Ukraine is paying for its independence and the importance of international solidarity.
