Russia has used a new drone attack tactic today: «Shakhtys» are moving along the border of Belarus at a distance of 5-10 km, attacking en masse and in an organised manner. The goal is to break through Ukrainian air defences and increase the number of targets hit in the west of the country.
New tactics of Russian attacks
According to a soldier with the call sign «Flash», during a drone attack today, Russian forces used a non-standard route for the first time to «Shahedov». The drones were moving along the border of Belarus at a distance of 5-10 km, in an organised and dense manner, literally one after the other. This approach allows the enemy to concentrate the attack and create an additional burden on Ukrainian air defence.
This time, the drones were launched in large numbers, making them difficult to intercept and increasing the risk of some groups breaking through into the interior of the country.
The aim of the attacks is to break through air defences
The Russian military is trying to overload Ukrainian air defence systems, to allow for a massive drone strike into western Ukraine. This tactic complicates the work of the defence forces, as it forces them to disperse resources over a considerable distance along the border. Experts note that organised massive drone attacks can pose a serious challenge to the Ukrainian military, especially in the face of constant pressure on technical and human resources.
What we know about drone traffic
«The Shahids move in small groups, but at minimal intervals. This density of flight allows the drones to »disguise« themselves behind each other, making it difficult to detect them by radar AIR DEFENCE. In addition, the chosen route along the Belarusian border allows attacking drones to avoid some active air defence zones and bypass the main defence lines. As a result, some of the drones can break through further west, where the level of protection is traditionally lower.
Why it matters
Changing tactics of drone attacks indicate that Russia is constantly looking for new ways to put pressure on Ukraine. Massive organised drone raids could lead to an increase in the number of targeted facilities and put an additional strain on Ukraine's air defence. This underscores the need to adapt defence strategies and respond quickly to new security challenges.
The Russian drone attack continues, and information is being updated.
