Russian threats against Finland
Harsh remarks directed at Finland have once again been made in the Russian State Duma. A deputy Alexey Zhuravlev, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma’s Defence Committee, stated that Russia was capable of «wiping out half of Finland». These remarks were made in response to Helsinki’s decision to establish a maintenance centre in Tampere for jet systems manufactured by an American company Lockheed Martin.
Zhuravlev emphasised that Finland is deliberately provoking Russia by stepping up its military cooperation with its Western allies. He claims that Russia has sufficient military equipment to strengthen its presence on the Finnish front.
«Finland is becoming a second Ukraine,» said the Russian MP, referring to the possible deployment of NATO military infrastructure within the country.
These threats come against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between Finland and Russia following Finland’s accession to NATO in 2023. There has been no official response from the Finnish authorities to these statements as yet. Zhuravlev also named the President of Finland Alexandra Stubb «crazy», accusing the Finnish authorities of escalating tensions.
It is important to note that, following its accession to NATO, Finland continues to strengthen its defence cooperation with the US and other allies, a development which is causing concern in Moscow. Russia believes that such cooperation could lead to a further escalation of the conflict in the region.
