At least 17 people have been killed and 139 others injured as a result of Russia's most powerful missile strike on 20 regions of Ukraine. Dozens of residential, critical and industrial infrastructure facilities were damaged in Kyiv, Lviv, Zakarpattia and other regions.
Scale of the attack: strikes in 20 regions
On the night of 14 May, Ukraine experienced one of the most tragic attacks in recent months: Russian troops launched a massive missile and drone strike on 20 regions of the country. According to preliminary reports, at least 17 people were killed and 139 others were injured. The debris is still being cleared, and the number of victims may increase.
According to the information Ukrmedia, Both large cities and smaller towns came under fire. Kyiv, Lviv, Zakarpattia, Volyn, Dnipro, Kharkiv and Odesa regions were the most affected.
Kyiv and the region: destruction in the centre of the capital
Three people were killed and more than 40 injured in Kyiv. 11 high-rise buildings, dozens of cars, a supermarket, two car dealerships, two PETROL STATION, a business centre, a service station, a veterinary clinic, kiosks, garages, a private house and a car park. Fires in warehouses, damage to residential buildings, businesses, outbuildings and vehicles were reported in Kyiv region.
Rescue services are working continuously to eliminate the consequences of the strikes and help the victims. Local authorities are urging residents not to ignore alarms and to stay in shelters during the shelling.
West and South: blows to energy and infrastructure
In Lviv region, energy and industrial facilities were targeted. In the Transcarpathian region Critical infrastructure and residential buildings were damaged. Volyn region came under shelling in Lutsk and Kovel: non-residential buildings, cars and housing near critical facilities were damaged.
Rivne and Zhytomyr regions reported hits to civilian, railway and transport infrastructure. In Ivano-Frankivsk region, an apartment building and an administrative building were damaged. In Khmelnytsky and Vinnytsia regions, private and apartment buildings, as well as agricultural enterprises, were damaged.
In Odesa region, the port, industrial and residential infrastructure, transport and residential buildings were damaged. In Mykolaiv region, particularly in Pervomaisk, buildings and cars were damaged.
East and Centre: hits to housing, businesses and transport
Poltava region reports hits to a power substation, industrial equipment, warehouses, vehicles and residential buildings. In the Dnipropetrovs'k region, private and apartment buildings, businesses, an administrative building, a petrol station, a gas pipeline and 20 cars were damaged.
In the Kharkiv region, the shelling affected the residential sector, railway and energy infrastructure, businesses, farms and transport. Donetsk region also suffered damage to residential buildings, high-rise buildings, cars and non-residential premises.
Sumy region and Chernihiv regions report destroyed private houses, outbuildings, civilian infrastructure, transport and educational institutions. Cherkasy and Zaporizhzhia regions also reported damage to private houses, transport, housing and infrastructure.
Why it matters
The massive shelling of 20 regions of Ukraine has not only caused significant casualties and destruction, but has also once again highlighted the vulnerability of civilian and critical infrastructure to Russian attacks. Restoration of the damaged facilities will take time and significant resources, and the security situation remains tense across the country. Such attacks are aimed not only at the physical destruction of infrastructure, but also at exerting psychological pressure on the population and the government.
