A political scandal in Poland
A major scandal has erupted in Polish political circles over the possibility of a secret transfer to Ukraine of scarce PAC-3 MSE anti-aircraft missiles for its air defence system Patriot. Deputy Speaker of the Polish Sejm Krzysztof Bosak, one of the leaders of the right-wing «Confederation» party, expressed concern about the situation and called for an investigation.
«We have extremely alarming information that the government, bypassing parliament, has secretly sent Patriot missiles to Ukraine – missiles that are absolutely essential to our air defence system! If this is true, it is a real scandal,» said Bosak.
He emphasised that these missiles are of critical importance to Poland’s own security, as they are capable of intercepting Russian «Iskander» ballistic missiles deployed in the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation.
How did it all begin?
Rumours about the transfer of missiles emerged following an interview with a reserve colonel in the Polish Army Piotr Lewandowski. He openly stated that Poland had handed over a certain number of Patriot missiles, which are of great value to them. The situation was exacerbated by the fact that, during a meeting of the contact group in the «Ramstein»The Ukrainian side publicly thanked Poland for providing missiles for its air defence systems. However, it was not clear at the time whether this referred to the physical transfer of ammunition or to Warsaw’s financial contribution towards their procurement.".
Government response
Head of the Office of the President of Poland Zbigniew Bogucki acknowledged that the opposition’s concerns were justified. He drew a parallel with previous deliveries of MiG-29 fighter jets, when the government had failed to keep the head of state properly informed. The former head of the Bureau of International Policy Marcin Przydacz stated that the government had not merely handed over the missiles, but had also “ceded its place in the queue” to the US.
«The Americans manufacture these missiles, and there is a huge waiting list for them. Ukraine was behind us in the queue. But our government gave up its place in favour of Ukraine,» said Pszydacz.
The Ministry of Defence’s official position
Official Warsaw is trying to defuse the situation, but is not revealing any details for security reasons. Poland’s Deputy Minister of National Defence Cezary Tomczyk In response to questions from journalists, he stated: “The list of military aid and donations being provided to Ukraine is entirely classified.” Opposition MPs are already preparing legislative proposals designed to prohibit the government from exporting or transferring strategic weapons without official approval and a vote in the Sejm.
