Musk promises a full-length «Odyssey» from Grok by the end of the year

Elon Musk has stated that the Grok neural network will produce a feature-length film adaptation of Homer’s *Odyssey* by the end of the year, which he described as «historically accurate». The billionaire announced his intention on X by reposting a three-minute AI-generated video created by another user. No details have been made public regarding the production, the team, the release platform or the running time of the forthcoming film.

What exactly did Musk announce?

Musk stated that the result should be ready by the end of the year. He described the forthcoming film adaptation as «historically accurate», but did not explain exactly which criteria — archaeological, cultural or other — the team would apply to the film’s plot and visual style.

As yet, no details have been released regarding the project’s producer, director, screenwriting process, budget, cast or distribution method. The only material released so far is a three-minute video clip created by AI and shared by Musk on X.

Grok’s capabilities and the limitations of the announcement

The xAI documentation describes Grok Imagine is a tool for generating videos based on a text description, an image or a reference. It also allows you to edit and extend clips. The xAI examples feature individual clips lasting 5, 10 or 15 seconds, specifically in 720p resolution.

Consequently, producing a full-length film using the current tools will require the creation of a large number of short scenes and their subsequent editing together. It has not been publicly disclosed how this project will ensure character consistency across episodes, narrative coherence, sound, editing or the verification of historical details. This does not prove that the concept is impossible, but it highlights what xAI has not yet explained.

What might a «historically accurate» version mean?

Musk’s formula cannot be regarded as a definitive standard for the entire Homeric narrative. The *Odyssey*, traditionally attributed to Homer, was first recorded in written form in the 8th century BC, but it has preserved earlier oral layers. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford notes that the poems underwent changes over the centuries before the text was finalised.

One may strive for historical accuracy in reconstructing everyday life, seafaring, weapons or costumes. At the same time, Odysseus’s journey itself features mythological characters and supernatural episodes. Even the helmet made from a boar’s tusks, known from Bronze Age archaeological finds and mentioned in the Homeric tradition, belongs to a different chronological period from that in which the poems were first recorded in writing. It is therefore more a matter of a claimed historical reconstruction of the setting than of the proven historicity of the plot.

An announcement against the backdrop of Nolan’s success

Prior to this statement, Musk had repeatedly criticised the film adaptation «Christopher Nolan’s *Odyssey*, claiming that the director had «desecrated Homer» for the sake of an «Oscar». According to Variety, he publicly criticised the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, amongst other things.

Nolan’s film was released internationally on 17 July, whilst Musk’s statement was made on 22 July. In its opening days, the film grossed $264 million worldwide; the AP gave a more precise estimate of $264.1 million, of which $51.8 million came from IMAX screenings. Universal describes the film as the first feature-length film shot entirely with IMAX cameras.

The proximity of these events in time suggests that the announcement can be interpreted both as a technological promise and as a media response to the success of Nolan’s version. This is an editorial interpretation of the sequence of events, rather than Musk’s stated intention.
