As he explains Amazon’s official description of the film, the main character Pencil is focused on her academic career. However, her friend falls in love with the boy that Olive herself had fancied.
To show that she has already forgotten about her former crush, the heroine impulsively kisses the professor Adam Karlsen. An agreement is then reached: they will portray a couple, whilst adhering to certain rules and boundaries.
Problems arise when this pretence of intimacy ceases to be just a game. Arranging a date turns out to be easier than coming to terms with your own feelings.
Lily Reinhart and Tom Bateman: who played the lead roles
Oliv brought to life Lily Reinhart, and Adam’s — Tom Bateman. The main character’s friend was played by Rachel Marsh, and Jeremy by Nicolas Duvernay.
Claire Scanlon directed the film, and the screenplay was written by Sarah Rothschild. The adaptation was based on the novel of the same name by Ali Hazelwood.

The Guardian, on the other hand, believes that the screen adaptation lacks that romantic spark, despite Lily Reinhart’s best efforts.
Columnist Ready Steady Cut Jonathan Wilson also singled out Reinhart’s performance, but was critical of Bateman’s emotional restraint and the central pairing’s lack of conviction.
