A large screen for films, several monitors for work and gaming — all in a device that weighs about as much as a pack of cards. At Connect 2026, Meta unveiled Meta VR Glasses. The new product is designed to make virtual reality more convenient for everyday use, but its compact design comes at a price: a separate processing unit and a cable.

Meta VR Glasses: how they managed to reduce the weight
As the company explains in official announcement, the displays and sensors remain in the glasses, whilst the processor, storage and battery are housed in an external module. It is connected to the frame via an optical cable.
The stated weight of 100 grams refers to the glasses, not the entire set. This is a key point for understanding the new product: the strain on the head is reduced, but you will have to carry the additional device with you.
This approach may be particularly suitable for watching videos for long periods. However, true comfort is not determined by weight alone: the fit of the frame, the pressure on the bridge of the nose and the convenience of the cable will all be important factors. It will only be possible to assess this fully following extensive independent testing.
What’s on offer for films and entertainment
Meta announced micro-OLED displays 5K Infinite Display, support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. According to the company, this is the first VR device to be certified as IMAX Enhanced.
It has also been announced that there will be over 100 immersive sports broadcasts each year following the launch, and more than 75 gesture-controlled games available from the outset.
The main appeal of this format is the ability to watch a large virtual screen in places where it is impossible to fit a physical television. For example, in an aeroplane seat or a small room.
At the same time, IMAX Enhanced certification does not in itself turn any video into an «IMAX screening». What will matter to the user is the specific catalogue, the quality of the recording and the availability of services in their country.
A workspace you can take with you
The company is also marketing the new product as a device for working with multiple virtual screens. Among the advertised features is the ability to turn any flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad.
For those who work with text, spreadsheets or several windows at once, this is an interesting scenario. But there is a practical difference between a demonstration and day-to-day work: typing a short reply and writing a long piece of text without physical keys are two different tasks.
It is therefore still too early to call smart glasses a fully-fledged replacement for a laptop. It is worth checking how convenient they are for specific tasks.
Battery life, price and release date
The following has been announced for Meta VR Glasses up to three hours of high-definition video playback and 45 W charging. Sales are scheduled for spring 2027 at a price of $1,299.99.
The battery life figure relates to a scenario specified by the manufacturer. It should not automatically be applied to gaming or intensive use.
Meta is putting forward a straightforward concept: a large personal screen that’s easy to take with you. Whether it becomes a mass-market product will depend on how comfortable the glasses are to use on a daily basis — and whether the experience justifies the cost to the buyer.
