Some consumers in seven regions were temporarily left without electricity as a result of hostilities and shelling of energy infrastructure. Separately, bad weather has caused power cuts in towns and villages in the Ternopil, Kyiv and Chernihiv regions. The Ministry of Energy and Ukrenergo reported on the situation on 14 July; no power restrictions are forecast for that day.
Briefly about the main points
- Some customers in seven regions have been temporarily left without electricity.
- Severe weather has left 72 settlements in three regions without power.
- An accident has occurred in the Podil and Obolon districts of Kyiv.
- At 09:30, consumption was 2.2% higher than the previous day.
- Energy suppliers advise shifting peak consumption to between 11:00 and 15:00.
Where restoration work is underway
Due to the hostilities and shelling of energy infrastructure Power cuts have been reported in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions. The Ministry of Energy has stated that emergency repair work is already underway wherever safety conditions permit.
The bad weather has also affected the power grid. Owing to the thunderstorm and gusts of wind, by the morning 72 settlements in the Ternopil, Kyiv and Chernihiv regions were either completely or partially without electricity. Regional power company crews are repairing the damaged power lines.
Emergency power cut in Kyiv
DTEK has reported that there is a temporary power cut in the Podil and Obolon districts of the capital due to a fault. The initial statement does not specify the extent of the fault, the number of customers without power, or when the repairs will be completed.
At the same time, the Ministry of Energy does not anticipate any general power cuts on 14 July. This does not rule out localised power cuts caused by damage, weather or emergencies.
Consumption is rising due to cloud cover and the heat
According to Ukrenergo, as of 09:30 on 14 July, electricity consumption was 2.2% higher than at the same time on Monday. Energy officials attributed the change to cloudy weather in most regions: this reduces the efficiency of domestic solar power stations, leading to increased consumption from the main grid.
Rising air temperatures and the use of air conditioning were cited as additional factors. The previous evening, the daily peak in consumption was recorded; it matched the peak of the previous working day, Friday 10 July.
When energy suppliers advise you to use electricity
Ukrenergo recommends, where possible, shifting active energy consumption to the period between 11:00 and 15:00 — the time when industrial solar power stations operate most efficiently. This advice relates to load distribution throughout the day, rather than an announcement regarding the introduction of restrictions.
A combination of weather-related damage to the grid, localised incidents and higher demand means that the electricity supply situation may vary from region to region. At the same time, statements issued by the Ministry of Energy and Ukrenergo on that day referred to repair work and indicated that no general restrictions were forecast.
