On the night of 14 October 2026, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure in five regions at once — Kharkiv, Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi and Ternopil. Facilities essential to the operation of the railway system, including energy infrastructure, were targeted. According to Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, the material damage is significant; however, thanks to early warning and the evacuation of staff, no fatalities or injuries were reported. Due to damage to the track infrastructure and the threat of further strikes, train services were temporarily restricted. Over 100 passenger trains were delayed in the morning, whilst railway staff began restoration work.

Russia has launched massive strikes on the railway network in five regions
Chairman of the Board of JSC «Ukrzaliznytsia» Oleksandr Pertsovskyi reported that Russian troops had attacked railway infrastructure in various regions of Ukraine during the night.
According to him, the enemy is attempting to damage the facilities and equipment essential to the operation of the railway system: locomotive and carriage depots, repair workshops, railway stations, stops and rolling stock.
A massive wave of attacks swept across five regions:
-
Kharkiv;
-
Kyiv;
-
Vinnytsia;
-
Khmelnytskyi;
-
Ternopil.
The railway’s power infrastructure was damaged during the attack. Staff promptly began restoring the power supply to ensure that trains could continue to run.
In some places, damaged infrastructure and other obstacles were blocking key railway lines. As a result, it was necessary to alter the routes.
Ukrzaliznytsia staff were evacuated in time
Despite the scale bombardments, there were no fatalities or injuries amongst the railway staff.
According to Pertsovsky, staff were warned of the danger in good time and moved to safe locations. Thanks to the well-organised evacuation, the staff were able to weather the night-time strikes without any loss of life.
At the same time, the company’s director emphasised that the material damage caused by the attack was significant. The exact number of damaged facilities, the cost of the destroyed equipment and the timeframe for its full restoration have not yet been disclosed.
Over 100 trains have been delayed following overnight shelling
The large-scale attack led to significant disruptions to the passenger transport timetable.
According to this morning’s data from Ukrzaliznytsia’s train tracking service, 106 trains were running late. The delays affected both domestic and international services.
As at 09:20, the longest delays were recorded on the following routes:
| Train | Delay |
|---|---|
| No. 93/94 Kharkiv – Chełm | 9 hours 50 minutes |
| No. 1/2 Kharkiv — Rakhiv | 6 hours 34 minutes |
| No. 21/22 Lviv — Kharkiv | 5 hours 56 minutes |
| No. 15/16 Chernivtsi — Kharkiv | 5 hours 51 minutes |
| No. 119/120 Chełm – Dnipro | 5 hours 22 minutes |

The duration of delays varies as services resume. Passengers are advised to check the current arrival and departure times of their trains.
The Kyiv railway junction was shut down due to a ballistic threat
Certain restrictions were in place in the capital region. According to Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, traffic at the Kyiv railway junction was temporarily suspended during the ballistic threat. Trains were held up for safety reasons, to avoid putting passengers and staff at risk during a missile attack.
Once the threat had subsided, train services began to resume gradually. The delayed trains set off one by one along their routes. On the damaged sections of track, railway staff are organising alternative routes to ensure the continued operation of passenger and freight services.
Ukrzaliznytsia is repairing the damaged infrastructure
Restoration work began on the morning of 14 October. Experts are repairing damage to railway infrastructure, restoring the power supply and ensuring that trains can run on sections of track where the security situation allows.
Despite significant material losses, Ukrzaliznytsia is continuing to operate services and is gradually bringing trains back to their normal timetable.
Passengers can check the latest information on delays via Ukrzaliznytsia’s official service. The company emphasises that during air raid alerts, people’s safety remains the top priority.
