Russian strike on «Epicentre»: what happened last night
On the night of 9 October, residents of Chernihiv heard an explosion. It later emerged that Russian troops had attacked a site located near the city’s administrative boundaries. The Chernihiv City Council reported that the strike took place after 3 am.
According to preliminary information, the targeted building is located outside the boundaries of the Chernihiv city territorial community, in an area adjacent to it. A journalist from «Suspilne Chernihiv», who arrived at the scene, established that the building in question is a DIY hypermarket belonging to the «Epicentre» chain. A fire broke out in the shopping centre following the strike.
The fire engulfed the central part of the building
According to a reporter from «Suspilne», the fire started in the central part of the shopping centre. The flames spread to part of the hypermarket’s roof.
Night-time footage from the scene has been shared on social media. It shows fire engines and rescue workers at work near the building. Specialised equipment was used to extinguish the fire, including a ladder truck capable of delivering water to great heights. Thick smoke can be seen rising above the building.
Russian troops have once again attacked a commercial infrastructure facility
Hypermarkets in the «Epicentre» have already been targeted by Russian attacks on several occasions. In particular, on 8 September 2026, Russian troops attacked one of the chain’s shopping centres in Pryluky, in the Chernihiv region.
A major fire then broke out, and two people were injured. According to the State Emergency Service, around 50 rescue workers and 15 pieces of equipment were deployed to deal with the aftermath. Due to the large amount of flammable materials inside the building, the fire spread rapidly. The operation was complicated by the risk of the fire reigniting.
