Pressure on the Kremlin is mounting
Following a series of Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory, pro-Russian nationalists are increasingly calling on the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to sever diplomatic ties with the US and launch a larger-scale military campaign. They believe that the Kremlin’s current strategy does not allow it to respond effectively to attacks by Ukrainian drones in Moscow, St Petersburg, Crimea and other regions.
Radical demands
Some members of the Russian nationalist movement are proposing significantly harsher measures. These include: a complete rejection of the negotiation process, an intensification of massive strikes on Ukrainian cities, the elimination of the Ukrainian political leadership, strikes on companies in European countries that manufacture weapons for Ukraine, and the use of tactical nuclear weapons. Statements of this kind are appearing with increasing frequency on pro-war Russian Telegram channels and in the media.
The Kremlin is not changing course for the time being
Despite mounting pressure, the Kremlin has so far shown no willingness to abandon diplomatic contacts. This week, several senior Russian officials stated that talks with the US had not yielded the expected results, but Moscow continues to leave the door open for political dialogue. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defence has repeatedly stated in recent months its intention to carry out systematic strikes against military targets on Ukrainian territory.
Why it matters
The escalation in rhetoric from Russian «hawks» points to an internal debate regarding the Kremlin’s future strategy following Ukraine’s successful strikes deep into Russian territory. At the same time, Moscow’s official position remains unchanged for the time being — the Kremlin is not ruling out negotiations, but is simultaneously continuing its military campaign against Ukraine.
