Fire Point plans to begin mass production of the FP-7X interceptors by the end of August

The Ukrainian defence company Fire Point plans to begin mass production of FP-7X interceptor missiles by the end of August to counter ballistic threats. The company expects that this new development will expand the capabilities of Ukraine’s missile defence system and help replenish stocks of specialised interceptors designed to counter Russian missiles.

Production must ensure a stock of interceptors

The announced move towards large-scale production will mark the next stage following development and testing. For missile defence, it is not only the introduction of a new model that is important, but also the ability to manufacture it regularly in sufficient quantities for use during attacks.

Russia is capable of launching several ballistic missiles in a single attack. Consequently, the stockpile of interceptors needs to be constantly replenished, and mass production could potentially increase the number of available defences.

The FP-7X could complement existing air defence and missile defence systems

Ballistic targets are difficult to intercept due to their high speed and the short reaction time following launch. Ukraine relies heavily on Western systems capable of countering such threats; one of the key systems is the Patriot, equipped with missiles PAC-3.

In-house production could reduce dependence on supplies of ready-made imported interceptors, although this does not mean a complete abandonment of international cooperation. Fire Point linked FP-7X as part of a wider project FREYJA, where the missile is intended to operate in conjunction with radars, launchers, a fire control system and integration.

Fire Point is responsible for the interceptor, launchers and integration in this project, whilst the German company Hensoldt is to supply the TRML-4D radar.

The start of production does not equate to confirmed proof that the system is capable of consistently destroying ballistic missiles. Its practical effectiveness will depend on the interceptor’s performance, the operation of the detection and guidance systems, and the results of its deployment against various targets.
