The US has invited Russia to take part in the G20 summit in Miami, where the possibility of talks between Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump is being discussed. The Ukrainian president has confirmed his readiness to attend the meeting, though Putin’s participation and the holding of trilateral talks remain unconfirmed publicly.
What is known about the invitations to the G20 summit in Miami
On Russia’s invitation Reuters reported as early as 24 April, citing an American official. According to him, Moscow has accepted the invitation to take part in the forum.
At the same time, an invitation to a country does not imply confirmation that its leader will personally attend. A Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov at the time, he assumed that the summit might be attended by both Putin, as well as another representative from Russia.
The G20 Leaders« Summit is scheduled for 14–15 December 2026. The presidents of Ukraine and the US have already commented on the possibility of using this forum to hold talks on ending the war.
Zelenskyy is ready for talks with Putin
In an interview with Deutsche Welle, published on 12 September, Zelenskyy stated that he was prepared to travel to Miami and meet with Putin if the latter were also to attend the summit.
«We need to meet, discuss the matter and reach a decision,» emphasised the President of Ukraine.
According to Zelenskyy, it is the outcome of the conversation that should be decisive. He also stated that a truce on energy matters and grain as a possible first step towards further negotiations.
On 22 September, the Ukrainian president once again expressed his willingness to hold a trilateral meeting with Putin and Trump. Zelenskyy hopes that the United States will help bring Moscow to the negotiating table.
How Trump assessed the possibility of a trilateral meeting
During the meetings with Zelenskyy In New York on 22 September, journalists asked Trump whether Putin would agree to come to Miami for a three-way meeting.
The US President replied that he did not know. He recalled his previous meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska and suggested that another meeting might take place. However, he did not confirm that Putin would be attending the meeting in Miami.
Consequently, the G20 summit is seen as a potential platform for diplomatic engagement, but it is too early to announce that trilateral talks have been agreed upon. Zelenskyy’s public willingness to engage in such a format has not yet been backed up by confirmation of participation from all three leaders.
