The European Union will disburse the first tranche of €6bn from the €90bn military part of the loan to Ukraine. The funds should arrive no later than June, but the procedure is still ongoing.
First tranche of EUR 6 billion
The European Union has agreed on the first tranche of the military part of the loan to Ukraine, which will amount to €6 billion. This is part of the total assistance package EUR 90 billion to support the country's defence capability.
The funds are expected to be transferred to Ukraine in June 2026 at the latest. The exact date of disbursement has not yet been determined, as some procedural issues remain to be resolved.
Required procedures
To receive the funding, Ukraine must open a special bank account with the Deutsche Bundesbank. This is one of the key conditions for the transfer of funds.
In addition, Kyiv should grant the EU the right to monitor expenditures from this account. The relevant procedures are already being agreed between the parties.
Speeding up the process
Normally, it takes several months to open an account and complete all the formalities. However, Ukraine and Germany have agreed to speed up the process.
The parties are working to shorten the timeframe and ensure that the first tranche is disbursed on time.
Control over the use of funds
The European Union insists on transparency in the use of the allocated funds. To this end, it provides for monitoring of expenditures from the special account.
Ukraine has agreed to provide the necessary control rights to ensure that the funding is used for its intended purpose.
