Ukraine is ready to contribute to ensuring safe navigation in the Black Sea, provided that Russia takes concrete steps towards de-escalation. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement on 23 September during the sixth summit of the International Crimea Platform. Kyiv has already reviewed its partners’ proposals and is awaiting a response from Moscow.
Safe navigation in the Black Sea: Ukraine’s position
According to «Interfax-Ukraine», the president confirmed Ukraine’s readiness to support vessel passage regime, which will ensure their safety.
«We agree to a passage arrangement that can ensure safety, and we are now awaiting Russia’s response,» said Zelenskyy.
He linked Ukraine’s participation in such events to the Russian side’s willingness to take concrete steps to ease tensions. This concerns both the safety of maritime transport and the security of food supplies.
What proposals have the partners prepared?
According to Zelensky, Ukraine has discussed possible solutions with its international partners. Egypt, India and Turkey have already put forward their proposals, which have been set out in writing.
The President noted that Kyiv is open to measures capable of ensuring the safety of shipping. At the same time, he linked the implementation of these measures to corresponding steps on Moscow’s part.
The speech therefore focused on the Ukrainian side’s willingness to support the proposed solutions and its anticipation of a Russian response. Mr Zelenskyy did not mention any bilateral agreement that had already been reached.
What Zelenskyy said about Crimea
The Head of State also emphasised the link between the region’s security and the Russian occupation of Crimea. According to him, Russia must begin by showing respect for other states, which it violated by invading the peninsula in 2014.
The President linked a return to normal life to the restoration of security, the protection of people, the release of prisoners held by Russia, and compliance with the fundamental principles of international law.
Ukraine is also working to safeguard the food corridor and the export of other goods needed by global markets. Mr Zelenskyy thanked the partners who are assisting with this work.
